A Ryerson University graduate will perform on Second City’s Mainstage as part of the new holiday improv show Eat, Buy, Repeat: The Second City’s Guide to the Holidays.
Allana Reoch was hired to the cast of Second City Touring Company in June.
The female comedian has made a name for herself in the industry with her two-time Canadian Comedy Award nominations and earned a spot on JFL42’s New Faces character showcase in 2015. She also performs every Sunday with Toronto’s award-winning group, The Sketchersons.
“The fact that I get to go to a workplace with people who make me laugh and who want to be silly and make fun of this insane world we exist in is my dream come true,” said Reoch.
But, her dream career was never in comedy.
“I wanted very much to be a serious actress, but even something about that notion is hilarious to me, which is why I probably gravitated towards comedy,” said Reoch.
Reoch graduated in 2010 with a BFA in performance acting from Ryerson Theatre School, where she was involved in numerous plays and shows throughout her four years.
Reoch still performs onstage in front of an audience, but taking on a different form of live theatre called improv. The plot, characters and dialogue of improv skits are made up entirely in the moment and usually start off with a suggestion or topic from an audience member.
“I had never tried improv until after I graduated because I was too scared,” said Reoch. “I always felt like everyone that was a part of it was so funny and quick, and I never believed that I was capable of doing that.”
But now, she encourages all those wanting to break into the industry to get involved.
“Do the things you’re interested in doing instead of what you think you should be doing,” said Reoch. “Never get complacent; I often tell myself, ‘You’re only as good as your next project.’”
Eat, Buy, Repeat: The Second City’s Guide to the Holidays kicks off Nov. 21 at The Second City Mainstage. Tickets can be purchased on their website.
