Students and allies met to stand in solidarity with the black students from the University of Missouri on Nov. 18.
The United Black Students of Ryerson orchestrated a rally on the corner of Victoria and Gould streets in support of “Mizzou,” another name for the Missouri university, after the recent step-down of their university president concerning complaints that he didn’t support black students who faced racism on campus.
Students at Ryerson released a banner at the top of the bookstore that stated “We rise with Mizzou.”
The rally started with a crowd of about 40 and swelled to a group of around 80 supporters and onlookers. Black students and faculty members shared their stories about being black on campus in an effort to “challenge the culture of anti-black racism” on campus said Rajean Hoilett, one of the event’s organizers and chairperson of the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Federation of Students.
