The stigma surrounding depression can make it difficult to engage in an open and honest discussion with those who are affected by it.
When I started writing about mental health issues for The Ryersonian, I knew that finding a student to open up would be a sensitive task.
When I approached fourth-year RTA student Kyle Courneya about how he has dealt with depression, I was not expecting a candid conversation. Courneya agreed to an interview and told me about how he has managed his depression through his undergrad. He says that travel experiences offered by Ryerson, like a volunteer trip to Ghana in 2013 and spending a semester studying in Australia in his third-year, were pivotal moments in what he describes as a spiritual journey.
