The Toronto Marlies announced their training camp roster Monday morning and Rams fans might notice a familiar name on the list.
Alex Basso, fifth-year defenceman and captain of the Ryerson men’s hockey team, was invited to skate with the Marlies on an AHL professional tryout.
Basso is one of 12 defencemen on the Marlies’ initial camp roster and joins McGill University’s Dominic Talbot-Tassi as the only other Ontario University Athletics (OUA) player invited.
In 24 games last season, Basso posted career highs with 28 points and 14 goals. The 25-year-old also ranked second among OUA skaters in power-play goals and game-winning goals.
Basso’s strong numbers may have caught the Marlies’ attention, but this isn’t the first time a professional club has taken notice of the veteran defenceman. In 2013, Basso attended the Minnesota Wild’s development camp and in 2015, he took part in the Washington Capitals’ rookie camp.
Basso will hit the ice on Tuesday afternoon when Marlies training camp opens at the Mastercard Centre in Etobicoke.
