For the research amateur:
Do you know the difference between the World Wide Web and the Invisible Web? Learn how to navigate the latter this Tuesday from 2-3 p.m. in LIB 667A. The Invisible Web is around 500 billion times larger than the standard web. You’ll discover how to go beyond Google when it comes to finding more obscure research on topics like business and nursing. For more information on this workshop and others offered by the library, click here.
For the classical music admirer:
In the second installment of “Musicians@Ryerson,” the Thomas Lounge at Oakham House brings you the Windermere String Quartet on March 5. The event will include live entertainment, refreshments and insight on how to make it in the industry. Admission is free but capacity is limited. Doors open at 6 p.m. and admission is free.
For the outreach ally:
Join the School of Social Work as they celebrate their program’s 50th anniversary, and get an early start on International Women’s Day at Thursday’s “Social Work: Women and Labour.” Meant to recognize the important role women play as caregivers and support workers, the panel discussion — moderated by Winnie Ng — will begin at 6 p.m. on the seventh floor of Heaslip House in the Chang School building. To register for the evening, click here.
For the young innovator:
Starting on March 7 and ending on March 8, is the Radio and Television Arts’ “24-Hour Story Hackathon”. Open to any and all students — from computers programmers and journalists to artists — you’ll have the chance to collaborate on ideas using design, programming, writing and other skills to develop ideas that would help UNICEF. Last year’s event contributed to UNICEF’s goal of improving the lives of children everywhere by eliminating polio (for a snapshot into last year’s event, click here). Click here to register as an individual or team.
Honourable mention:
End your weekend on an exciting note by making your way down to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on March 9. If you love decorating and/or superheroes, you’ll have the chance to attend the last day of the 26th International Home & Garden Show or the Toronto ComiCon. Don’t miss your chance to meet experts and celebrities at both events: ComiCon welcomes guests such as Dollhouse’s Eliza Dushku and The Walking Dead’s Irone Singleton, while the Home & Garden Show hosts a seminar by celebrity interior designer Lynn Spence.
