History

Studying History will develop students’ proficiency in critical thinking, and enhance their ability to question, research, argue, understand, and communicate. All of these skills are vital in enabling them to succeed in a wide range of careers and participate in the life of the world around them as informed citizens.

The strong research, analytical, and communication skills, along with the cultural awareness that History teaches, are valued by employers widely. Therefore, graduates follow a broad range of career paths, with business, the public service, creative industries, and non-governmental organizations being common realms where they find work. As well, a certain number of History graduates move into careers in museums and the heritage sector. Many individuals with a BA in History continue their education in master’s degree and other graduate programs, or seek professional post-graduate career training in faculties such as law, education, and information studies.

Politics & Governance

Students studying Politics and Governance will learn to evaluate and analyze political decisions, administrative practice, and policies that emerge from a variety of sources, and to evaluate them on a range of criteria, including empirical, theoretical and ethical bases.

Graduates of the program will be able to pursue careers in a variety of capacities in any of the public, private, or third (voluntary and nonprofit) sectors. These may include becoming a policy analyst for the federal, provincial, or municipal government, a decision-maker in an NGO or a position in the private-sector, with a company that has extensive interactions with government, or that conducts public research. It might also include positions in international governmental organizations (such as the UN and World Bank), or non-governmental organizations.

Public Health & Safety

Public Health and Safety focuses on injury and disease prevention in public spaces by anticipating, evaluating and controlling physical, biological, chemical and other hazards in the community. Drawing on their specialized knowledge, they help develop and implement initiatives that improve health, safety, and well-being in a range of settings that are accessed by the public.

The program also prepares you for professional certification at the national level by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI). National certification permits graduates to seek employment opportunities across Canada as a Public Health Inspector (PHI).

Biology

The BSc in Biology shares a common first year with the BSc programs in Chemistry, Contemporary Science, Mathematics and its Applications, and Medical Physics. The program emphasizes environmental biology, microbial ecology and molecular biology with applications to biotechnology and environmental science. You can also minor in Chemistry or Psychology and choose specializations in Biophysics or Computational Biology.

Biology co-op students find work in a variety of roles and settings in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, research laboratories, and in the food and cosmetics industries. Graduates can choose to pursue research or science management roles in both the government or academic world. Other opportunities include careers in agri-food, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. Many go on to further studies in a masters or doctorate program to pursue careers in medicine, dentistry or other health-related fields.

Chemistry

The BSc in Chemistry shares a common first year with the BSc programs in Biology, Contemporary Science, Mathematics and its Applications, and Medical Physics. Ryerson's Chemistry program offers a flexible curriculum that enables you to chart your own academic paths and customize your degree further with a minor in Biology or a specialization in Applied Physics or Management Science.

Mathematics & Its Applications

The BSc in Mathematics & Its Applications shares a common first year with the BSc programs in Biology, Chemistry, and Medical Physics. This program takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of mathematics. Medical Physics

The BSc in Medical Physics shares a common first year with the BSc programs in Biology, Chemistry, Contemporary Science, and Mathematics & Its Applications.
