After winning back the title of “Canada’s Olympic network,” the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) unveiled its coverage plans and broadcast team for the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games at a public event held at the CBC Broadcast Centre in Toronto Wednesday.
The CBC has broadcasted the Olympics on 19 occasions dating back almost 60 years. However, for the most recent games, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, CTV was the official broadcaster.
The CBC won back the broadcast rights for 2014 in Sochi, Russia and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The Sochi games are starting in less than 100 days. Viewers will be able to watch their favourite CBC Olympic broadcast veterans as well as a few fresh faces.
Seasoned veterans Ron MacLean and The National‘s Peter Mansbridge will co-host the opening ceremonies on Feb. 7 from the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi.
Meanwhile, new to the lineup are Andi Petrillo and Andrew Chang, who will be in Sochi to cover the events as they unfold, as well as CBC Radio’s Jian Ghomeshi and Matt Galloway from Metro Morning, who will broadcast the Winter Games over the airwaves to Canadians.
Wednesday’s event celebrated the 100-day countdown to the opening ceremony. It was hosted by MacLean and Scott Russell.
