CIBC is supporting Ryerson with a gift of $500,000 toward student awards at the Ted Rogers School of Management, much of it specifically for females.
“Ryerson is proud to partner with CIBC on advancing diversity and student opportunity,” said president and vice-chancellor Sheldon Levy, in a press release. “This important investment will have a direct influence on strengthening our economy and culture, and we thank CIBC for their ongoing leadership and support.”
The donation will support two annual CIBC Awards at the TRSM. There are two entrance awards for first-year Accounting and Finance students both worth $4,000. One will be exclusively for a female student.
Apart of the proceeds will also go towards the CIBC Women in Business Technology Management Award and up to 12 women will be awarded $5,000 for each year of their study.
The goal is to allow these women to become leading contributors to Canada’s ICT economy (Information and Communication Technology).
Chantelle Gubert, first-year Business Technology Management, found out through email that she was one of the winners of the award in late October.
She says this award is a positive reinforcement to giving females the money they need to stay out of working part-time and focus on “school work, networking, and getting involved.”
Dean Steven Murphy says women continue to remain underrepresented in ICT and financial fields. “This gift is one important step in creating a pipeline of young, talented women who will be the technological leaders of industry tomorrow,” he said in a press release.
CIBC continues to support Ryerson and students after fostering community health education about a decade ago.
