REMINDER: Building access changes for EPH, SHE, RCC and VIC come into effect November 1, 2019

October 23, 2019

On October 7, 2019 we sent you a communication letting you know that Ryerson will be rolling out a pilot project that will change the way community members access four Ryerson buildings in the evenings during the week. Weekend access to these buildings will not be affected by the implementation of this pilot.

With this change, you will require a OneCard to enter the following buildings on weekdays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.:

  • Eric Palin Hall (EPH): 87 Gerrard Street East
  • Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health (SHE): 99 Gerrard Street East
  • Rogers Communications Centre (RCC): 80 Gould Street
  • Victoria Building (VIC): 285 Victoria Street

Implementation date set for November 1

We have now set a date for these access changes to take place. Beginning at 7 p.m. on November 1, you will require a OneCard to enter these four buildings.

Why is this pilot being implemented?

Community Safety and Security regularly reviews the university's safety policies and procedures in an effort to continually enhance safety and security on campus. This change is based on feedback from Ryerson community members regarding after-hours access to buildings on campus. As we go through the first phase of this pilot project, we may continue to amend the strategy as required and will incorporate feedback from Ryerson community members.

How this change will impact you

If you already have a OneCard, no action is required*

As long as you are an active student or employee, your OneCard will grant you access to these buildings.

*Please note that some OneCards previously issued to Chang School students do not have the RFID chip required for building access. Chang School students are encouraged to visit the building access pilot project webpage to determine whether they will require a replacement OneCard. There is no charge associated with obtaining a OneCard with an RFID chip.

If you don’t have a OneCard

Students and employees who require access to these buildings should apply for one in person at the OneCard Office. When you arrive on site, a photo of you will be taken for your OneCard and your card will be issued within minutes. There is no cost associated with applying for a new OneCard. A replacement OneCard may be obtained for $35 from the OneCard Office.

Learn how to apply for your OneCard and accepted government-issued identification required to complete your application.

Once your OneCard is issued, you will gain access to these buildings from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. within two business days.

I forgot my OneCard and require building access between 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

If you do not have your OneCard and need to enter these buildings between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., you can use the intercoms located at entrances and exits to connect with a member of Ryerson Security. Calls will be answered in priority sequence as soon as someone is available. You will be asked to verify your identity and affiliation with Ryerson before being granted access into the building. Valid forms of identification besides your OneCard includes any photo identification, combined with documentation stating your name and Ryerson student or employee numbers.

You are strongly encouraged to have your OneCard on you at all times to avoid delays as Security may be occupied with other matters and we cannot guarantee immediate assistance.

I’m hosting an event or am expecting guests external to the university between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

If you are hosting an event or are expecting guests external to the university (including guest lecturers) in one of these buildings between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., you are responsible for ensuring event participants are able to gain access to the building. You can do this by stationing your staff or volunteers at the building entrance or by requesting a dedicated Security staff member.
