Students and employers flooded Gould Street on Thursday for Ryerson’s part-time jobs fair.
Thirty-six employers set up tables to recruit Ryerson talent. Event coordinator, Jean-Pierre Fernandes said he was happy with the traffic the fair generated.
“Employers talked about how impressed they were the calibre of students that were coming through,” said Fernandes. He added that some students told him that they were hired on the spot.
If you missed the event but are still looking to get part time work, The Ryersonian spoke to six employers at the fair about what they’re looking for in potential employees:
Sherwin-Williams
“The biggest thing we’re looking for is attitude,” said Adam Skiles, one of the Toronto City Managers at Sherwin Williams
“We like pairing up here with Ryerson, we want to meet students with a great attitude and that’s the building blocks of a successful career.”
Pusateri’s Fine Foods
“Anyone can apply but we really do hiring based on personality—we’re looking for bubbly people,” said Ashley Mataya, talent acquisition specialist at Pusateri’s
COS (sister brand to H&M)
“Students, generally speaking, have a really great energy they bring to the workforce,” said Marc Huppler, a department manager at COS.
“We sell clothing but it really is inspired by the fine arts, which is why Ryerson is a really, really great place for us.”
The North Face
“As long as you come in with a good attitude and are willing to learn, that’s all we ask,” said Tyler Starzynski, a manager at The North Face store on Bloor Street. “A slightly above minimum wage job shouldn’t stop people from studying,” he added.
Louis Vuitton
“We like to have people that want to connect with other people,” said Melissa Jamerson, a human resource manager at Louis Vuitton.
“As long as [students] can guarantee a commitment to us, then we, of course, try our best to commit to them as well.”
Canadian Property Stars
“What we’re really looking for are the ones who really want to put in the effort, are hard working and want to get rewarded for that,” said Elixabeth Ruggeri, head of human resources and administration at Canadian Property Stars.
“If they’re motivated, they have a goal that they want to reach, we want to be able to help them reach that goal,” she added.
