Student killed by lightning on University of Waterloo campus

It is with deep sadness that the University of Waterloo must confirm that a first year student was struck and killed by lightning while walking on campus this morning, Friday, September 5, 2014.
 
The incident took place on a pathway leading from the ring road to an area of residences known as Student Village 1 at around 9 a.m. The student died of their injuries in hospital.
 
Waterloo Regional Police are in the process of notifying the family. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the student at this most difficult of times.
 
We ask that the media respect the privacy of the individuals involved. We will share more information when next of kin have been informed.
