BREAKING: Today, the federal government officially designated January 29 as a National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia

Since the Quebec City mosque shooting on January 29th 2017 there has been a groundswell of support across the country to designate January 29 as a national day of action against Islamophobia, hate, and racism. Several municipalities and provinces have designated the day.

Over the years we at NCCM have worked shoulder-to-shoulder with community organizations of many faiths and backgrounds to call for this designation so that we are always reminded of the monumental task of eradicating Islamophobia, hate, and racism from our country.

We thank the government for taking this step to officially mark this day in the hearts and minds of all Quebecers and Canadians as a reminder of the innocent lives lost and the work ahead of us to eradicate Islamophobia, hate and racism from our country

Dear Prime Minister: This month, we approach the fourth anniversary from the devastating massacre at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec that left six Muslim men dead and gravely injured many others. It was the most horrific and violent manifestation of Islamophobia in this country. The tragedy of January 29, 2017 left 17 children without their fathers and robbed six women of their husbands. Canadian Muslims are still reeling from that hatred and the terror that was inflicted upon them on that fateful night in Quebec City. Almost four years since that tragedy, on an almost daily basis Canadian Muslims continue to face one form of Islamophobia or another. Recent attacks against religious, racial and other minorities in Canada have demonstrated beyond any doubt that no one community can combat this hate alone. Rather, as Canadians, we must come together and unite, not only against Islamophobia but against all forms of hate. Weeks after the attack in 2017, many called on the government to designate January 29th as a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Islamophobia. On the second anniversary of the attack, in solidarity with diverse minority communities across the country, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) and dozens of leading organizations renewed this call to government to designate, by order-in-council or by proclamation, January 29th as a day to mark the impact of hate, intolerance, and Islamophobia. Many of us have been urging the government to act to designate the Day since. We thank you today for recognizing the Day. As the recognition of the Day reminds us, we need to commit to action against Islamophobia, hate, and intolerance. We want to see action to dismantle white supremacist groups, including groups in Canada that glorify the name of the Quebec City Mosque shooter.
