Ryerson graduate debuts film at TIFF
The Last Porno Show premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 10 at the Scotiabank theatre.
The film was produced and directed by Ryerson alumnus Kire Paputts, who graduated from Ryerson’s School of Image Arts in 2009. This is Paputts’ third time debuting films at TIFF — he debuted his short film ‘Animal Control’ in 2010 and ‘The Rainbow Kid’ 2015.
Paputts said that he tries to use his work to give voice to people who are marginalized within society. The film follows Wayne, played by Nathaniel Chadwick, who is dealing with the death of his father with whom he had a strained relationship. When Wayne inherits his father’s porno cinema, he struggles to figure out what to do with it and uses it to try and better himself within his acting career.
A big part of Paputts’ inspiration for The Last Porno Show was the exploration of the similarities between him and his parents. Paputts said he wanted to capture the way people are influenced by those who raise them.
The Last Porno Show will also be shown at this year’s Hamilton Film Festival on Nov. 7, 2019.
