  • How much Harding knew or didn't know about the attack on Kerrigan is somewhat secondary, if that can be believed.

  • Gillespie has imbued his film with black humour, while never undermining the authenticity of the characters or detracting from the abuse that runs through the story.

  • [Allison Janney's] undiluted unsentimentality is the perfect compliment for a sporting underdog movie that disobeys the rules.

  • Craig Gillespie directs with all the subtlety of a baton-wielding thug but has made at least one brilliant decision in casting Margot Robbie, who is practically a machine for generating empathy.

  • Whatever your views on the US in general and Harding in particular, you'll leave this cheering for Margot Robbie. Bravo!

  • It leaves a sense of several stronger movies half-buried beneath a mish-mash of the poignantly heart-rending and the outlandishly farcical, and just about salvaged from mediocrity by its one sensational turn.

  • There's great heart in Margot Robbie taking on a national joke, a secondhand villain, and turning her into a quiet hero.

  • I, Tonya is far from your typical biopic, and it's all the better for it. Buoyed by sharp, fun storytelling and Oscar-worthy performances, it's exactly the type of movie this story deserved.

Audience Reviews for I, Tonya

A clever interpretation of a bizarre event in skating history. It uses a comical narration breaking the third wall at times. Robbie shines and makes you care somewhat for a unlikable person whose upbringing never gave her a chance as an adult. Janney steals the show as her foul mouthed uncaring mother and Sebastian Stan is also good as her violent and out of control husband. The superior soundtrack also makes the movie watchable. It is worth watching for sure. 06-07-2020

Excellently directed picture by Craig Gillespie with sharp wit. Margot Robbie is one heck of an actor. But, I can't help but feel that she's miscast in the role of Tonya Harding. The troubled figure skater was layered in muscles and that physical presence was one of the reasons the snobs at the U.S. Figure Skating Association disliked her. Nonetheless, Robbie hits all the emotional points.

I'm not sure the movie wanted me to, but I for one wasn't on Tonya's side for a second. I wasn't on her horrible mother's or the asshole boyfriend's either, mind you. I just don't buy the "blame the public for always wanting a scandal to follow" attitude. It's pretty damn entertaining and full of great performances to follow dumb, egomaniac people making really stupid decisions for two hours. Almost made me feel like Fargo.

Based on a true story, I, Tonya is a remarkably compelling and tragic tale of ambition. The story follows the life of US figure skating champion Tonya Harding, from her beginnings as a young child in an abusive home to the scandal that ruined her career. Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, and Allison Janney all give excellent performances; especially Robbie, who has tremendous screen presence. And the script is incredibly well-written, with an unconventional narrative that constantly breaks the fourth wall. Additionally, the film has a subtle comedic wit and uses dark humor to lighten the tone. Also, the soundtrack does an amazing job at capturing the emotional resonance of the characters. A smart and well-crafted biopic, I, Tonya looks beyond the controversy and finds the humanity.
