Overall, the film comes across as robustly offering testimony for its subject rather than really offering a portrait; it rather presents itself as a character witness for a woman of more probity and principle than her chosen career would suggest.

Molly's Game is an entertaining and confident debut for Aaron Sorkin, even if it's definitely too long.

I was riveted from beginning to end with Molly's Game. It has some of the best performances of the year, it has some of the best writing of the year and it has a true life story that is so vastly strange and unbelievable that it truly has to be witnessed.

While the script crackles and excites, the film itself is profoundly uncinematic.

Based on real events, this tale of a talented woman trying to make it in a Hollywood stacked against her gains extra currency in the post-Weinstein climate.

Most of the arias in Molly's Game don't achieve liftoff, and so neither does the movie.

As director, though, Sorkin proves here that he's got the chops.

Aaron Sorkin and Jessica Chastain managed to convey what it is like to have integrity and drive in equal measure as a woman in a world designed by men.

May 30, 2019Extraordinarily compelling, Molly's Game is a fascinating biopic about an Olympic-class skater turned gaming entrepreneur. The film follows the life of Molly Bloom who fell out of competitive skiing after a debilitating injury and moved to LA where she got involved with underground poker and eventually struck out on her own and started running her own games until they were raided by the FBI. Jessica Chastain gives an excellent performance and is backed by a strong supporting cast, including Idris Elba and Kevin Costner. And writer/director Aaron Sorkin does a good job at explaining the inner workings of underground poker. Additionally, the flashback narrative structure helps to keep the film moving and builds intrigue. Molly's Game is an incredibly captivating drama with an interesting story to tell and a positive message about standing up for ones principles.Dann M Super Reviewer

Aug 19, 2018The first five minutes, giving you Molly's sports background, are utterly fantastic. They set a pace the movie somehow keeps up, although the rest of the story contains mostly people talking. But the editing is so breathless and the writing so on point that it sometimes feel like an action film, going back and forth. The actors are top notch, especially Chastain and Elba, the camera work has a few trick up its sleeves too. For a topic that does not sound particularly exciting on paper, the result is an incredibly engaging and ultimately even moving film.Jens S Super Reviewer

Apr 11, 2018Features Sorkin at his very best (enjoyable quip filled dialogue that propels the plot forward) and his absolute worst (the main character comes to understand herself because a man explains her to her). Chastain is the glue that kinda makes it all work even if it is problematic at times.Alec B Super Reviewer
