Ryerson architecture students’ winter station is a burst of colour on an icy beach landscape.
Last month, Ryerson’s president Sheldon Levy gave Lily Jeon and Diana Koncan $15,000 to fund their design for Toronto’s first Winter Stations competition.
Their design, called Snowcone was constructed around a lifeguard station on Kew Beach in February.
Jeon and Koncan’s design was one of five that were constructed on the beach.
A group of 20 students endured extremely cold temperatures for several hours to build the structure.
“It was pretty brutal,” laughs Jeon.
But she says it was worth it — the response to the station has been positive.
“The organizers have told us it’s been the most popular (station) … so that’s cool,” says Jeon.
She attributes this partly to Snowcone’s location. The winter station is the first many encounter during a walk on Kew Beach. It’s also the most “eye-catching,” she adds.
The stations will be dismantled on March 22.
