It’s RSU Election Night. Unite Ryerson, Transform RU and one independent candidate, Joshua D’Cruz, will learn their political fates tonight in one of the most hotly contested elections in years.
This year’s campaign has seen lots of activity and also some controversy.
Unite’s candidate for vice-president education, Zidane Mohamed, was forced to apologize for comments he made on Facebook and Twitter applauding the death of two New York City police officers.
Last week, Transform RU’s candidate Obaid Ullah had his posters defaced with Islamophobic slurs.
The university administration also received a petition with 1,000 student signatures that called the school to investigate undemocratic campaign practices in this year’s election. The petition also asks the university to pressure the RSU to restart the election process, hire another chief returning officer and store ballot boxes in a secure location.
With everything that’s transpired, this election marks the first time in years that Ryerson students have been lining up to vote.
