RU Anime hosts Japanese-style maid cafe at Ryerson
Maid Cafes originated in Japan’s anime culture, where the notion of the subservient maid is popular, especially among male anime fans. Servers dress in elaborate maid costumes, and take extra care to treat patrons as though they are masters or mistresses. Customers come to take part in the “maid” fantasy, or just to enjoy a different kind of dining experience.
Ryerson’s anime club, RU Anime, hosted a wildly popular Maid Cafe on campus on March 13th. Maids and butlers were kept busy all afternoon as dozens of guests crowded into the Student Centre’s Thomas Lounge for bento boxes, rice balls and ice cream sundaes.
