This Friday marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. The campaign begins on Nov. 25, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and finishes on Dec. 10, Human Rights Day.
This year, Ryerson will be taking part in the campaign through several programs and events.
The Office for Sexual Violence and Support Education, Student Affairs, Ryerson Students’ Union (RSU), Continuing Education Students’ Association Ryerson (CESAR) and the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion have been working together on the campaign.
Ryerson’s theme for the 16 days is: “#TakeCareRU, exploring the ways we can support community members when faced with gender-based violence.”
Ways to get involved
The office of sexual violence support and education offers several ways students and community members can get involved in the campaign.
- TakeCareRU thank you ecards will be shared through the Ryerson Student Life blog as a way to say thanks to a community member who has addressed gender-based violence.
- Ryerson is curating a Canadian Gender-Based Violence Syllabus over the next year and is now accepting submissions.
Self-care events
Ryerson is hosting several events that focus on community care and self-care.
- Gilmore Girls Viewing – Friday, Nov. 25 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

December 6th
December 6th marks the day that fourteen women, including 13 engineering students, were gunned down at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal in 1989. Every year, Ryerson holds events in honour of this day.
Ryerson’s vigil will take place Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 12 p.m. at the Tree of Hope in the quad, followed by a presession to the Student Learning Centre with guest speakers and a rose ceremony.
