The search for Ryerson’s next president and vice-chancellor is underway.
On Tuesday, Senate named the first four members of the committee that will be tasked with choosing President Sheldon Levy’s replacement. On the committee are Mohamed Lachemi, provost and vice president academic, Usha George, dean of the faculty of community services, Nancy Walton, associate professor in the school of nursing, and David Checkland, associate professor in the philosophy department.
Checkland has been on the search committee for the two most recent provosts but this will be his first time selecting a university president. He said they first need to decide on characteristics that they want in the new president.
“Someone should be up to the task of representing Ryerson to the government and other university bodies,” Checkland said, adding there is probably a small pool of qualifiers.
The final seven members of the 13-person committee, which will include at least one student representative, will be chosen at the Board of Governor’s meeting at the end of this month. The new president could take office as soon as July 2015.
At the end of last semester, President Sheldon Levy announced that he would not be seeking a third term at Ryerson.
