Ryerson’s social media sites are the third most influential among Canadian universities, a study shows.
The study was conducted by MediaMiser, a site that focuses on media monitoring and analysis. Over the winter, it tracked the social media accounts of Canadian universities to highlight their online influence. The study looks at the universities’ Twitter retweets, followers and Facebook likes.
Ryerson ranks third in influence as determined by Twitter and Facebook mentions. The University of Western Ontario and the University of Waterloo ranked first and second respectively.
Ryerson’s five-year-old Twitter account has more than 23,000 followers, compared to Western, which holds the top spot with 30,600.
The communications, government and community engagement department manages both the Twitter account and the Facebook page.
“[The study] demonstrates Ryerson’s commitment to using new and innovative channels to communicate effectively and our desire to spark great conversations about Ryerson’s activities and accomplishments,” said Erin McGinn, assistant vice-president of communications, government and community engagement, in a press release.
Bruce Piercey, director of communications, says the school has been targeting social media growth to build its online presence.
“It’s rewarding to see our social media channels earn this latest recognition and we accept the challenge of finding new and innovative ways to achieve even more engagement and success,” he said in an email to The Ryersonian.
