The Ryerson Rams have scored another big victory for their athletics program.
The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) selection committee announced on Monday morning in a press release the hosts of eight national championships in soccer and volleyball over the next two years.
Following up last month’s bid for the women’s volleyball championship, Ryerson has been selected as the host of the 2017 CIS Women’s Volleyball National Championship.
It will take place in the historic Mattamy Athletic Centre, which is Ryerson’s primary athletic facility. The building can seat 3,000 spectators, providing the Rams with a large audience.
This will be the second national championship hosted by Ryerson.
The university was also awarded the 2015 CIS Final Eight men’s basketball championship in March.
Hosting the championships follows the recent success of Ryerson’s athletic program, particularly the women’s volleyball team.
Over the last two seasons, the team has compiled a record of 28 wins and nine losses and made it to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Final Four Championship in the 2012-13 season.
“We look forward to creating a memorable championship experience for all student-athletes and hope to build on the momentum we will have created from hosting the 2015 CIS Men’s Basketball Championship,” said Ivan Joseph, director of Ryerson athletics in the release.
The university has said it is proud to be the host for some of the best players from across the country.
“Student-athletes from across Canada inspire young people in our communities to aim high,” said Ryerson University president Sheldon Levy in a press release.
“Ryerson is delighted to have the opportunity to welcome our nation’s best CIS women’s volleyball teams to our campus and city.”
The 2016 tournament is set to be held by Brandon University in Manitoba.
More details about the tournament are set to be announced by Ryerson athletics over the next few months.
