Ryerson students who attend classes in the Cineplex theatre have been caught trying to sneak into the movies for free.
In the past two weeks alone, 18 students have been kicked out of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is showing in the IMAX theatre in complex at 10 Dundas East.
Getting kicked out of a movie theatre also isn’t the only consequence; Cineplex has the right to ban Ryerson students from the theatres if this keeps happening, and students won’t be able to attend class.
Khaled Sennah, chair of the civil engineering department at Ryerson, sent out an email to all civil engineering students saying that this issue is serious and “if Ryerson students continue to attempt to sneak into the theatre without paying, we have been informed that the Cineplex management could decide to bar Ryerson students from entering the theatre in the future.”

Ryerson currently has a deal with Cineplex to use theatres for classes, and students gain access to the space by showing their OneCards. Once they’re in the theatre, there’s no one to monitor whether they actually attend classes.
“The Imax theatre is in the back,” said Isaiah El-amin, one of Ryerson’s employees who checks for students’ OneCards. “If students have class upstairs, they come down the escalators and then they can just go to the back. It’s hard to patrol that.”
“That’s the downfall of having classes in the movie theatre,” said Nate Weisbrod, who also checks for OneCards.
At 6 p.m., Ryerson employees clean the theatres and stay until around 6:30 p.m., but won’t do any extra monitoring for the theatre after that.
Despite a thread on Reddit last year soliciting advice on how to sneak into movies after Ryerson classes, not much has been done about this issue before.
Ryerson security and integrated risk management did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
