Title: The Fault in our Stars
Genre: Young Adult
Pages: 313
About the author: John Green was inspired to write this novel while working at a children’s hospital. He was also influenced by his friend Esther Earl, who had thyroid cancer and died at 16. The novel has been made into a movie starring Shailene Woodley, which will be released this summer. This is Green’s fourth book. He and his brother Hank hold 1.9 million subscribers on their Youtube channel, “vlogbrothers.”
Plot: The Fault in our Stars revolves around 16-year-old Hazel Lancaster. She has thyroid cancer that spread to her lungs. Hazel’s parents force her to attend a cancer support group. At the support group, Hazel meets Augustus Waters, a now cancer-free amputee. Together, they embark on a journey filled with love, heartbreak and romance.
Why you should read it: This book is a must-read before the movie comes out. Be warned that you will probably need a box of tissues. Green brings his characters to life with multi-dimensional personalities, which you don’t often see in young adult novels.
