Homeless winter
Toronto city councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, street nurse Cathy Crowe and director of transitional housing for Egale Canada Human Rights Trust, Clare Nobbs, came together on Tuesday to discuss the city’s actions on winter respite centres for the homeless. The panel was moderated by Ryerson instructor Pascal Murphy and was put on by Journalists for Human Rights.
The panellists spoke about pressure from the public on the city during the winter months, and how that should not falter as the seasons change.
“The community has to deal with less housing stability, illegal dumping, discarding needles and aggravated assaults,” said Wong-Tam. “We have to charge at [the problem] with basic rights. Whether you say they are homeless or not, that’s garbage. We have to be really clear and make human rights a foundational point.”
Social Media lab
The Ryerson University Social Media Lab produced a report showing the usage of social media among online Canadian users, with data from 2017. The report, The State of Social Media in Canada 2017, involved the input of 1,500 Canadians who were surveyed on their social media use.
Of those surveyed, 84 per cent used Facebook, 59 per cent used YouTube, 46 per cent used LinkedIn and 42 per cent used Twitter. Platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat and Tumblr had lower usage data.
The report was written by Anatoliy Gruzd, Jenna Jacobson and Philip Mai at Ryerson University, and Elizabeth Dubois at the University of Ottawa.
