Queen’s University professor, Arthur McDonald, won the Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday. McDonald will share the honour with University of Tokyo’s Takaaki Kajita.
The scientists discovered that neutrinos — neutrally charged subatomic particles — have mass. McDonald studied the particles in Sudbury using an underground detector that is the size of a 10-storey building.
This discovery will change the Standard Model of particle physics because the theory assumes that neutrinos have no mass.
McDonald and Kajita will split the $1.3 million dollar award.
