The Toronto Transit Commission is proposing to replace the current one-way, single-use transfer system with an alternate time-based travel plan.
The proposed transfer method will allow passengers to travel in multiple directions on one ticket for a fixed period of time – likely two hours.
A preliminary trial of this newly proposed system has already rolled out on the 512 St. Clair streetcar and bus route.
At Tuesday’s TTC board meeting, various members debated if the system should launch transit wide. If the transfer system is implemented, TTC officials say they will lose $15 million in revenue every year.
Chris Upfold, the Chief Officer of Customer Service at the TTC said it’s worth the loss.
“It’s a great value for customers and if that’s what it boils down to,” he says. “ It would make our customers happier.”
Ryerson student, Nathaniel Vermeer, says the new transfer system will benefit him.
“It benefits me because I can go out, come back and only pay once, it’s a good deal,” he said.
